Food Wars: Rice vs. Quinoa – What’s Healthier? [Video]
It’s 2012. White is out.
What does this mean?
It simply means white rice, white pasta, white bread, etc. should be 100% out of your diet if you’re looking to live the lean lifestyle.
Is Rice Healthy?
Various types of rice go through several refining steps before it’s packaged and sold to you in a grocery store. Let me simplify it:
Step #1: Remove the husk (outermost layer of the grain)
Step #2: Remove the bran
Step #3: Remove the germ
Brown Rice goes through step #1 and stops. This means brown rice retains the bran and germ.
White Rice goes through step #1-3. The processing removes the husk, bran, and germ.
Most of the vitamins and minerals are removed during this 3 step process for white rice. Even if the package says “enriched” white rice, these are synthetic forms of vitamins and minerals. Your body doesn’t absorb synthetic versions as well as natural vitamins and minerals.
Even though the calorie and carb count of white rice and brown rice are very similar…it’s the removal of the bran and germ (which removes most of the nutrients) that is the problem.
If you’re eating rice…stick with Brown Rice!
What’s Healthier…Brown Rice or Quinoa?
If you haven’t heard of quinoa yet, you must be lost in the 1980s!
Quinoa has made quite an impression on the health food scene these last few years. The great thing I like about it is it’s a full complete protein. This means it contains all the necessary amino acids (in sufficient amounts) to build lean strong muscle.
Brown rice does not contain this same muscle building amino acid profile.
Although both are a good source or slow release complex carbohydrates, the macro and micro nutrient profiles are also quite a bit different.
Lets take a look:
Carbs: Point to Quinoa (also for the higher amount of fiber)
Protein: Point to Quinoa (especially since it contains a full amino acid profile)
Micronutrients: Point to Quinoa for more iron, magnesium, folate, phosphorous, zinc.
Does this mean Quinoa is the winner and you should not eat Brown Rice?
Maybe, maybe not.
